OFF GRID POWER SYSTEM
Gel or Lead acid Batteries, 2 -5-12 Volt
Gel, VRLA AGM, Carbon batteries all have similar properties and design considerations, typically they are 2 Volt – 6Volt systems if using 2 Volt batteries they are generally configured into a 48 volt design meaning you would need 24 in parallel to give nominal operating voltage of 48 Volts, the 48 Volts is the typical nominal operating voltage of the inverters and chargers, the amount of energy stored within these off grid power batteries is in the form of amp hours (AH) the larger the AH the more Kwh you will have at your disposal.

Considerations :

 Once your system is designed to the nominal operating voltage of 48V and the amount of off grid power is calculated using AH you will be very limited in adding extra batteries to increase your stored energy simply because adding another battery whether 2V – 6V it lifts the voltage from 48V to 50V or even 54V which is a long way outside the nominal operating voltage of the inverters and controllers.

 A system needs to be designed to use the available off grid power within the allowable depth of discharge (DOD)amounts set out in specification sheets, the more energy you use from the batteries each day will reduce its life, the higher the DOD the shorter the life, most systems should be designed to only take 30% of the available off grid power daily resulting in around 5,000 cycles, 2 cycles each day around 7 year life expectancy.

 If you needed 30Kw of power each day the system size would need to be a 100Kwh battery storage system at 30% DOD, this in effect would also allow for 4 days of bad weather before your batteries were flat, of course doing this regularly will result in significant shortening of battery life.

 If a battery starts to collapse it will also pull down the other batteries in the group.  You can’t simply replace one battery in a group this will cause long term damage to the new battery and faster than expected degradation of older batteries.

 6 monthly maintenance checks required to ensure batteries are in healthy state.

Lithium Ion Batteries - 3-5kwh per battery
Lithium batteries have design considerations similar to Gel or lead acid type batteries, we will still need to understand your off grid power needs and what pumps and appliances you intend to use off grid, gel batteries or similar need to be built in stacks to get them up to the nominal operating voltage of the inverters and chargers and the calculation of AH is important to get the correct amount of off grid power delivered. Lithium batteries are all ready at a nominal operating voltage meaning you and start with one battery and can build, the individual batteries are also monitored and controlled so each battery can perform at their best, if there is a battery issue in some cases the battery is isolated while the other batteries are allowed to operate at 100%.

Considerations :

Aquion Batteries (Salt) 2.4Kwh per cell
Ideal as new system design or to replace existing lead acid based battery banks These batteries are a combination of new and old technology, traditional off grid power batteries need to be built (bank) to a 48 volt nominal operating voltage the Aquion salt battery is all ready designed to 48Volts meaning you can start with one battery same as Lithium batteries, while they are known as salt batteries salt water is the electrolyte as opposed to acid in a tradition battery, the main components internally are a Stainless steel Current collector, Manganese Oxide Cathode, Carbon Titanium Phosphate Composite Anode. These batteries for off grid power are ideal and still need considerable space considerations.

Considerations :

below their nominated voltage realistically we achieve 70% DOD.
 3,000 Cycles to 70% retained capacity thereafter.

 Can tolerate extreme temperature conditions
 No maintenance other than general cleaning.
 Needs similar space to a more tradition Gel battery solution.
 One battery will allow for only 680 watts continues power, the more batteries the more off grid power.

REDFLOW bromine battery, 8Kwh per battery
Australian designed battery with unlimited potential, operating voltage is 48V meaning we can couple these off grid power batteries in parallel to store as many Kwh as needed. Redflow has designed a battery which passes bromine (electrolyte) through a series of plates and channels to increase the available current; the bromine is circulated via DC pumps circulating bromine from holding tank to the plates at the top of battery housing. The limiting factor is the inverters and controllers; again as the battery reduces its stored energy it drops its volts so dependent on what inverters and charges are unused. The off grid energy within the battery and how low you can take the DOD will be determined by this fact.
